Is There a Weight and Age Limit for Whitewater Rafting?

Here’s a question we get every single day at Whitewater Rafting LLC: “Is my kid old enough to go?”

And right behind it: “Is my dad too old?”

The answer to both is probably yes — they can go. But the right trip depends on how old, how big, and how adventurous your crew is. Here’s the complete, honest breakdown so you can stop guessing and start booking.

Why Age and Weight Limits Exist (And Why They Actually Matter)

This isn’t bureaucratic red tape. It’s physics and safety.

Whitewater rafts hit real waves. Guides give real paddle commands. When a 6-year-old needs to “paddle hard forward,” they need the strength, coordination, and attention span to do it. That’s what the age minimums protect.

Weight limits exist because life jackets are sized and rated by weight. A properly fitted PFD (personal flotation device) is your primary safety system on the river — if it doesn’t fit right, it doesn’t work right.

Whitewater Rafting LLC has been running trips on the Colorado River since 1974. These limits come from five decades of knowing what actually keeps people safe — not from a lawyer.

Age Limits by Trip Type

Short & Mild Rafting Trip — Minimum Age: 4

View Short & Mild Rafting Trip

This is the entry point for the littlest adventurers. The Short & Mild covers a calmer section of the Colorado River with gentle waves and stunning canyon scenery. At age 4, kids are old enough to follow basic safety instructions, hold a paddle, and have the time of their lives without the intensity of Class III rapids.

Perfect for: Families with toddlers and young kids, first-timers of any age, grandparents, guests who want scenery over splash.

“We weren’t sure how our 8 year old would do so we opted for the short trip… Our daughter decided to take the plunge and go the whole half day — she had a blast!”

— Amanda Simon, Google Review

Half Day Rafting Trip — Minimum Age: 6

View Half Day Rafting Trip

The Half Day hits the Shoshone section — Colorado’s most famous stretch of whitewater. Class III rapids, canyon walls rising 1,000+ feet on both sides, and about 3 hours on the water. At 6, kids are ready for the action.

Perfect for: Families who want real whitewater without a full-day commitment, first-time adults, groups with mixed experience levels.

“There was also plenty of time to float down the river and take in the scenery. JC took great care of our kids throughout the trip — gave them extra tasks and challenges during the relaxing/floating sections: a chance to steer the boat, a balance challenge on the bow…”

— MeredithVanV, TripAdvisor Review (11 and 9-year-old kids)

Full Day Rafting Trip — Minimum Age: 6

View Full Day Rafting Trip

Everything the Half Day offers, plus more river, more rapids, and a riverside lunch included. Same minimum age of 6, but recommended for kids and adults who are comfortable with sustained activity and water.

“The water levels were still high enough to experience class 3 waves — perfect for the younger kids on our trip who had never rafted before (age 8 and 11).”

— Austin Bacchus, Google Review

Double Shoshone — Minimum Age: 12

View Double Shoshone

Two runs through Shoshone back to back. This is where it gets serious. The elevated minimum age reflects the physical demands: sustained paddling, bigger water, faster reactions required.

Double Extreme Shoshone — Minimum Age: 12

View Double Extreme Shoshone

The most intense experience on the menu. Two full runs through Shoshone in higher water conditions. Not recommended for first-timers of any age.

Is There an Upper Age Limit?

No. Full stop.

We’ve had guests in their 70s and 80s on the river. Age is not the barrier — fitness and comfort level are. If someone can sit in a raft, hold a paddle, and follow guide instructions, they can raft.

The Short & Mild trip is specifically popular with older guests who want the canyon experience without the intensity. The views from Glenwood Canyon are the same regardless of which trip you choose.

Weight Limits: The Honest Answer

The standard weight limit is 250 lbs per person for most trips.

This is tied to life jacket sizing and fit. PFDs need to fit snugly to work. If a standard jacket doesn’t fit correctly, we cannot put someone on the water — not because we don’t want to, but because it’s a genuine safety risk.

If you have a question about weight limits before booking, call us directly at (970) 945-8477. We’ll give you a straight answer, not a runaround.

Rapid Classifications: Matching the Trip to the Person

Not all whitewater is created equal. Here’s how the international rapid rating scale works:

  • Class I — Moving water, minimal waves. Basically a float.
  • Class II — Small waves, easy maneuvering. Beginners welcome.
  • Class III — Moderate waves, some maneuvering required. The Shoshone section. This is what most of our trips run.
  • Class IV — Large, powerful waves. More technical. Not available on standard trips.
  • Class V — Expert water. Not offered commercially.

Our Short & Mild trip runs Class I-II water. Our Half Day, Full Day, and Shoshone trips run Class III. The Double Extreme Shoshone hits Class III at higher flows.

Knowing this helps you match the trip to your group’s experience level — not just their age.

Tips for Bringing Kids

  1. Talk it up before you go. Kids who know what to expect have more fun and less meltdown.
  2. Wetsuits are available. For spring trips especially, rent one. Cold water + nervous kid = rough day.
  3. Trust your guide. Our guides work with kids every single day. They know how to make the experience feel safe and exciting at the same time.
  4. Start conservative. If you’re unsure, book the Short & Mild. You can always upgrade to a longer trip — but you can’t undo a miserable experience.

“Carebear was our guide. He was extremely funny, personable, knowledgeable about the terrain, and you could really tell that he enjoyed what he does every day and really cares that the people he is with are having the most fun.”

— Shannon, TripAdvisor Review (brought teenage children)
